Roland Emmerich’s original sci-fi action film Independence Day warrants a solid B-. It was a simple story, great special effects and a great sense of humor. This was Will Smith’s breakthrough leading man role that showed he had a bit more range than Fresh Prince of Bel Air. The original Independence Day was overly long and subsequent home releases have an even longer version of the original, but in 20 years has still held up well. It was successful in taking shots at itself by involving some familiar nods to classic science fiction that preceded it. That being said, the various character arcs in ID4 made the film very affable to the theater-goers.

I've reviewed films for more than 20 years. Current movie reviews of new theatrical releases and direct-to-video or streaming films are added weekly to the Silver Screen Capture movie news site. Many capsule critiques originally appeared in expanded form in my syndicated Lights Camera Reaction column.
